MALWARE ATTACHMENTS REMAIN THE SINGLE LARGEST THREAT ON THE INTERNET
New mass-mailers appear at a rate of about three a week. Malware, a.k.a. computer contaminant, which includes computer viruses, Trojan horses, spyware and adware, is a software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer without owner's knowledge. There are four major ways to stop malware which comes as part of e-mail attachment:
Quarantining - e-mail attachments are held for admin review. This method is only effective when there is a dedicated person who has enough time and expertise to review every attachment held at the repository.
Rejecting - e-mail attachments are not allowed to come through at all. This method is less than useful to businesses in today's environment.
Zipping - e-mail attachments are zipped automatically and forwarded to users. This method does not resolve the problem, but rather slows down the infection rate.
Scanning - e-mail attachments are scanned for malicious code. Conventional anti-virus and firewalls will catch a majority of the malware; however, one should make sure to keep virus definitions up to date.
