Most fonts can be broken down into two
sorts - serif and sans serif. Typefaces with serif have small
bars at the end of most strokes in the letterforms, as shown
below. Typefaces that do not have serifs are called sans serif,
because the word "sans" is French for "without".

When you have a lot of text that you
want people to actually read, it's best to use a serif face.
When you have short amounts of text, as in headlines, subheads,
signs, etc., it's best to use a sans serif face.
